Job Advertisement Policy. There is never any charge to the hiring institution for running a position available ad in the Portland AGO newsletter--The Vox Humana. We will run the ad for three months, and if we do not hear from you, will discontinue it at that time. We will, however, happily continue to maintain it if you so request. Obviously, we would appreciate knowing if you fill the position. Finally we ask that if you hire a person through our Guild, that the church pay for their membership in the AGO for the following year. The dollar amount will vary with the membership category of the individual, but currently would be less than $100.To list a position available contact John Sullivan: 207-282-0271 or jtcsul_earthlink.netBelow is the link to the salary guidelines for church musicians for the state of Maine, applicable September 2009. Musicians with less than five years experience should be considered at the lower compensation levels and those with greater experience at the higher levels. Musicians with outstanding abilities or positions that require exceptional performance may exceed the chart figures. The second figure in each box represents benefits of 25% 35% of the base salary (for health insurance, pension, etc.). When an employer does not offer such benefits, this amount should be added to the base salary to allow employees to provide for their own needs. Compensation should equal the total compensation figure (base + benefits = total compensation).Questions about this table should be directed to the Professional Concerns Coordinator, Ray Cornils.TO USE THE SALARY GUIDE:1)Determine the average number of hours per week that the position demands. (A Formula for Determining workload and a Time Requirement Worksheet are available for this purpose). Discuss the subject with the organist/director to determine his/her best estimate of time required. These fees apply to organist only or choir director only positions.2)Determine the level of training of the person in question. Select the category that best fits that person, realizing that she or he may have the equivalent of a degree in organ performance or sacred music through other forms of study.3)The intersection of the level of training and the time columns will give the salary range. Those persons with little experience (5 years or fewer) would be considered at the lower salary level. Those with greater experience at the higher levels.WEDDING AND FUNERAL FEES:The Portland Chapter recommends the following fees:Funeral (service only)$150.00 - $300.00Wedding (service only)$150.00 - $300.00Wedding rehearsal with bridal party$35.00 - $50.00Additional Rehearsals with soloists, choir or instrumentalists$30.00 -$100.00/hour, depending on the difficulty of music Charge for contracting singers/instrumentalists$15.00 - $35.00/person hiredMileage55cents/mile if visits to church for practice, rehearsal, service exceed 25 miles/round trip.SUBSTITUE FEES:Go to Substitute Organists PagePlease note the change in status of the following announcement, following a vote of the National Council:South Church UU, Portsmouth, NH, wrongfully terminated a member of the American Guild of Organists on January 19, 2011, for which no resolution has been reached.
